PSKC

The Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC) aims at collection and consequently providing nationwide longitudinal data on the characteristics of children's growth and development, requirements and status of child care, functions and effects of child care support services, and impact of local communities and child care policies by conducting follow-up study and long-term study on the growth and development processes of Korean Children from the time of their birth

OVERVIEW

To achieve these goals, in 2006, the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE) developed a research model of PSKC to be promoted for several years into the future. Then, in 2007, a pilot study was carried out based on the PSKC research model developed in 2006. In 2008, the first year study was performed based on the sampling design and research methods of PSKC as confirmed after 2 years of preparation.

01

PSKC sampled babies born in medical institutes nationwide from April to July 2008; the study will be conducted annually until 2015 when these babies enter elementary school. From then on, follow-up study will be carried out twice: one in 2017 and the other in 2020. The study was designed to collect data comprehensively on the characteristics of children, parents, families, child care supporting services, local communities, and child care policies by systematically categorizing children as well as the environments that surround them. In addition to the annual study done every year, in-depth study will be carried out three times on approx. 10% of the panel children using the methods of observation, interview, and test during the critical periods when important development tasks take place in these children.

02

PSKC will comprehensively provide cross-sectional data on a single age group by implementing a nationwide panel of children. By continuously investigating the changes displayed in the process of children's development and experiences provided to children by their surrounding environments over a number of years, PSKC will also analyze the microscopic characteristics related to the development of children, raising of children by parents, and child care support services in Korea and consequently assist in identifying changes in the characteristics and causal relationships over time within the communities where they belong. The first annual conference was held in October, 2010 using the first year data. Disclosure of the national data would activate researches in the related fields and KICCE expects many a articles to be published using the disclosed data. By doing so, PSKC began to lay a precious foundation for the development of Korea's child care policies in the future.
